Research performance insights on thousands of institutions worldwide

The Overview module

The Overview module gives you a comprehensive research performance summary of any desired research entity such as institutions, countries, researchers, etc.

How to use the Overview module?

The Overview module provides you a quick summary of the research performance of an entity. Click the buttons below to learn about how to set up a module:

An entity is "anything that can be viewed in SciVal in terms of academic performance". You can use the entity selection panel on the left to select your entity of interest from:

  • Institutions and Groups

    • For Lingnan users, "Lingnan University" is the default institution to be shown

  • Researchers and Groups

  • Publication Sets

  • Countries, Regions and Groups

  • Topics and Topic Clusters

  • Research Areas

  • Scopus Sources

If the entity you want is not listed, click on the search bar (with the  icon) to search for your desired entity, and then click on it to add it onto your panel.

Self-defined entities

In SciVal, there are thousands of pre-defined entities e.g. countries, institutions, and research topics, etc. However, some entities such as researchers, research teams and publication sets are not pre-defined, you will need to define you own entities in order to view the metrics for them. You can define your own entity for:

  • Researchers / groups of researchers

  • Publication sets

  • Research areas

  • Groups of institutions

  • Groups of countries

How to define an entity?

Using the entity selection panel...

  1. Click on the "Add new"  button at the bottom left corner

  2. Click "Define a new..."

Using My SciVal...

  1. Choose the type of entity you would like to define

  2. Click on the "Add new"  button at the top right corner

  1. Search for the entity you would like to add
If you would like to verify author's publications when you are defining a researcher profile, you can click on "Validate publications". If not, click on "Directly go to Save Researcher"

  2. Click on "Save and Finish" and the selected entity will added into the selection panel

You can view the publication data for a period of three, five or ten years. Click on the date period under the entity name to select the year range.

You can also select a specific subject area to narrow the results to a specific discipline. If you cannot find a suitable one from the suggested list, you can define a new Research Area and use it as a subject area filter.

After setting up the module, you can then navigate through different metric themes' tabs to get the selected entity's research performance summary in terms of publications, citations, collaborations, and competencies, etc.
