Research performance insights on thousands of institutions worldwide

The Collaboration module

The Collaboration module allows you to evaluate the existing research collaborations of researchers, institutions or countries, and to identify potential opportunities for research collaborations.

How to use the Collaboration module?

In the Collaboration module, you can select an entity from the entity selection panel from:

Institutions and Groups

Researchers and Groups

Countries, Regions and Groups

Click the buttons below to learn about how to use the Collaboration module:

An entity is "anything that can be viewed in SciVal in terms of academic performance". You can use the entity selection panel on the left to select your entity of interest from:

  • Institutions and Groups

    • For Lingnan users, "Lingnan University" is the default institution to be shown

  • Researchers and Groups

  • Countries, Regions and Groups

If the entity you want is not listed, click on the search bar (with the  icon) to search for your desired entity, and then click on it to add it onto your panel.

Self-defined entities

In SciVal, there are thousands of pre-defined entities e.g. countries, institutions, and research topics, etc. However, some entities such as researchers, research teams and publication sets are not pre-defined, you will need to define you own entities in order to view the metrics for them. You can define your own entity for:

  • Researchers / groups of researchers

  • Publication sets

  • Research areas

  • Groups of institutions

  • Groups of countries

How to define an entity?

Using the entity selection panel...

  1. Click on the "Add new"  button at the bottom left corner

  2. Click "Define a new..."

Using My SciVal...

  1. Choose the type of entity you would like to define

  2. Click on the "Add new"  button at the top right corner

  1. Search for the entity you would like to add
If you would like to verify author's publications when you are defining a researcher profile, you can click on "Validate publications". If not, click on "Directly go to Save Researcher"

  2. Click on "Save and Finish" and the selected entity will added into the selection panel

You can view the publication data for a period of three, five or ten years. Click on the date period under the entity name to select the year range.

You can also select a specific subject area to narrow the results to a specific discipline. If you cannot find a suitable one from the suggested list, you can define a new Research Area and use it as a subject area filter.

By default, Lingnan users will see the "Institutions collaborating with Lingnan University" in map view in the Collaboration module. You can use the entity selection panel on the left-hand side to select another entity.

In the map view, you can view the collaboration landscape at word level, regional level or country level. Click on the collaboration marker  /  to zoom in to a specific region, country or institution.

  • The collaboration overview will be prompted when you put your cursor over a collaboration marker on the map.

  • The number in the blue collaboration marker  is the number of the collaborating institutions of a specific region or country.

  • By default, the number in the orange collaboration marker  is the number of co-authored publications with your institution. You can use the drop-down menu at the top-right corner of the map to change it to number of citations, citations per publication or field-weighted citation.

The "Current collaboration" tab shows you a global view of the collaboration partners of your selected entity.

Finding existing collaboration partners of an entity

  1. Select an entity from "Institutions and Groups", "Researchers and Groups" or "Countries, Regions and Groups", e.g. Lingnan University

  2. In the right panel, select "Current collaboration" and "Map"

  3. You will see a global overview of the collaboration partners of your selected entity

  4. Click on the green collaboration marker  to zoom in to a specific region or country to filter the collaborating institutions within a particular region or country, or click on the orange collaboration marker  to view the collaboration with a specific institution in details.

You can use the "Subject area filter" to limit the results to your research field. Define a new research area if you cannot find the one you want from the drop-down menu.

Other than the map view, you can also view the results in the table view which allows you to:

  • Sort the results by clicking on the arrow icon ( / ) for the corresponding column header

  • Select a different metric for citation impact by clicking on the "Select another metric" icon ()

  • Click on the number of co-authored publications to view the co-authored publication list, etc.

The "Potential collaboration" tab shows you the institutions which do not have any co-authored publications with your selected entity to enable you to identify the potential new opportunities for research collaboration.

Finding potential collaboration partners in your field

  1. Select your own researcher profile from the entity selection panel
If you profile is not available in the selection panel, read "Export Scopus Profile to SciVal" to learn how to export the profile to from Scopus to SciVal

  2. You will see a global overview of institutions which have not been collaborating with you

  3. Click on the green collaboration marker  to zoom in to a specific region or country, or click on the orange collaboration marker  to evaluate the potential collaborator in details

To better identify the most suitable collaboration partners for your research, you are recommended to use the "Subject area filter" to limit the results to the specific research field of your interest. By applying the subject area filter, you can easily find out the institutions and researchers that have been active within a particular field of research.

If you cannot find the appropriate subject area from the drop-down filter menu, you can create your own research area filter.

Alternatively, you can view the results in the table view which allows you to:

  • Sort the results by clicking on the arrow icon ( / ) for the corresponding column header

  • Select a different metric for citation impact by clicking on the "Select another metric" icon (), etc.
