Research performance insights on thousands of institutions worldwide

The Benchmarking module

The Benchmarking module allows you to view and compare the research performance of different entities based on a variety of metrics.

How to use the Benchmarking module?

In the Benchmarking module, you can select any entities of interest from the entity selection panel to evaluate their research performance based on a broad range of metrics. Click the buttons below to learn about how to set up the Benchmarking module:

An entity is "anything that can be viewed in SciVal in terms of academic performance". You can use the entity selection panel on the left to select your entity of interest from:

  • Institutions and Groups

    • For Lingnan users, "Lingnan University" is the default institution to be shown

  • Researchers and Groups

  • Publication Sets

  • Countries, Regions and Groups

  • Topics and Topic Clusters

  • Research Areas

  • Scopus Sources

If the entity you want is not listed, click on the search bar (with the  icon) to search for your desired entity, and then click on it to add it onto your panel.

Self-defined entities

In SciVal, there are thousands of pre-defined entities e.g. countries, institutions, and research topics, etc. However, some entities such as researchers, research teams and publication sets are not pre-defined, you will need to define you own entities in order to view the metrics for them. You can define your own entity for:

  • Researchers / groups of researchers

  • Publication sets

  • Research areas

  • Groups of institutions

  • Groups of countries

How to define an entity?

Using the entity selection panel...

  1. Click on the "Add new"  button at the bottom left corner

  2. Click "Define a new..."

Using My SciVal...

  1. Choose the type of entity you would like to define

  2. Click on the "Add new"  button at the top right corner

  1. Search for the entity you would like to add
If you would like to verify author's publications when you are defining a researcher profile, you can click on "Validate publications". If not, click on "Directly go to Save Researcher"

  2. Click on "Save and Finish" and the selected entity will added into the selection panel

You can limit the publication data to a specific time period. Click on the date period under the entity name to select the year range.

You can also select a specific subject area to narrow the results to a specific discipline. If you cannot find a suitable one from the suggested list, you can define a new Research Area and use it as a subject area filter.

There are over 30 different metrics available in SciVal. Selection of appropriate metrics is essential to a successful benchmarking. When determining metrics to be analyzed, you need to be clear on your particular question and be aware of the influencing factors that affect metric value, i.e. size, discipline, publication-type, database coverage, manipulation and time.

Here are some commonly used metrics in SciVal:

Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI)

The ratio of citations received relative to the expected world average for the subject field, publication type and publication year.

h-indices

A measure of both the productivity and citation impact of an entity, based on the number of publications as well as the number of citations they have received. h5-index is h-index for the past 5 years. g-index emphasizes the most highly cited publications. m-index is h-index per year.

Outputs in Top Citation Percentiles

The number of publications of a selected entity that are highly cited, having reached a threshold of citations received.

Publications in Journal Quartiles

The number of publications of a selected entity that have been published in the selected journal quartiles.

Publications in Top Journal Percentiles

The number of publications of a selected entity that have been published in the world's top journals.

SNIP (Source-Normalized Impact per Paper)

Is a ratio between the “Raw Impact per Paper” compared to the expected Citations per Publication, of that journal’s field. It’s a field-normalized metric. The average SNIP value for all journals in Scopus is 1.000.

By default, Scholarly Output and Publication Year are shown in chart view in the benchmarking module. To view a different metric, you can click on the “y-axis”/ “x-axis”/“Bubble size” button to change the metrics shown on the chart. You can select and view up to three metrics at a time in the chart view.

Data pop-ups

The metric value will be prompted if you place your cursor over a data point on the chart.

Timeline motion chart

You can also use the timeline motion chart when you have multiple metrics in the chart view. It allows you to view cumulative development of metrics over time.

From The Benchmarking module: Using the timeline motion chart and cumulative options by SciVal Support Center

The table view allows you to view more metrics at a time. You can add multiple metrics in one go by clicking the "Add multiple / manage metrics" button  at the top right corner of the table. Drag the desired metrics from the left panel to the right, and then click "Update metrics" to update the table.
